After thinking what I can do for the community in Hastings with photography, I thought I would give it a go to capture people working in Hastings, to show a series of people in the community.

I’ve never asked a stranger to be photographed before and actually the thought was a bit daunting, but i thought I’d brave it out (I look my friend out with me for some morale support! The majority of shops were closed but a little shop called "Roberts Rummage" on the High street caught my eye as we walked past.

The shop was full of antiques, books, pots and pans, china, jewellery, a bit of everything old. The shop was small and there were even items hanging from the already low roof. It was very tight for space, but at the same time, felt like there was just tons of history in the place. I thought right away, this is a great place to shoot.

No photography was allowed in the shop. Even one of the shoppers who attempted was told so by Robert, the shop owner. Sitting away in the side of the shop, brightly lit by several small lamps, he looked like a grandpa in a children’s book.

I asked him if he would mind me taking a photo of him. He was very reluctant actually, he thought i was trying to advertise for him and charge him. He told me he doesn’t do that kind of thing. I clarified, but he was still a bit dubious. I told him a little about myself and then got to ask him about his shop and how he came about starting it, and my gosh, this man has a history worth writing a book for! He was (and is) an arts collector and lecturer, historian, contributor to exhibitions and museums, previously a cook, now retired and own this shop as a hobby. He told me about his love for tribal textiles and he was so knowledgeably. Each item in his shop, collected and brought from locals / auctions over the years tell a story of its own. We stood for about 45 mins just chatting to him and in awe about his life story.

I finally asked again to take a photo and he was completely happy with it this time. I feel we have created a rapport, and the insight into his life gave me something to shoot for. I took a few quick snaps and the results... well, you can see for yourself. Does it tell a story to you? Please leave a comment. I would love to hear from you!
