Background

Fashion is about making a statement and representing oneself. As such, unique high-end garments are worn to show individuality. On the contrary, fashion have also been a part to show unity and solidarity towards a common goal, and have played an important role in political movements. One such example is seen in the heavily visual demonstrations and protests in Hong Kong. This fashion editorial stands in line of the protesters to explore the visual statements and symbologies used in their movement.

Location, set and lighting

I want this story to be in studio setting, to extract the essence from the protest movements and highlighted in a non-distracting environment. The mood is solemn, with light and contrasting shadows. Some (or all) images to be in black and white.

Compositions / story

This editorial is filled with symbolism seen in the protest movement. Inspirations from garments worn (e.g. black clothing), accessories (facemaskes, gas masks, eye patches)

poses (running, jumping, throwing, covering eye, tears, screaming... it is expressive) and the environment (tear gas, smoke, lasers). The story has an element of being both energetic and still at times for reflection. This story is not about being pro-movement, but rather an observation from a fashion standpoint, and therefore no slogans or country flags will be used.

Model type (1 model)

Edgy, editorial look, great at making expressions, short to shoulder length hair, preferred dark hair (brunette / black)

Makeup mood

edgy, smoky eyes, graphic eyes.

the eye make up can be particularly emphasised in a close up images with facemask, which draws attention to the eye. smudged or dripping makeup to represent tears, take inspirations from war paints.

Hair mood

some slick, some wild. wet look representing the sweat / tears / water canon used on protesters. messy look symbolises the tiredness and persistence of the protesters.

Styling mood

This is the part that is keystone to the story. dark garments, accessories to hide identity (face masks, eye patches, hats etc). Try to bring an edgy feel (for example using leather), but also show a softer side of dark garments (silk, scarf, sheer black, light weight) as a contrast. Raincoats, umbrella are also ideas for accessories. Think about some garments that are "action ready". Please research on the Hong Kong protest movements.
